What Is the Bat Maternity Colony?
There are many who know a great deal about bats. They live in regions where bats are quite common, and so they have done a rather extensive study on the animals.

However, most are oblivious to the back. Even if they are seen swooping around during the nighttime, they really don’t know much about them. All they can think of is that these are horrific little critters that are terrifying to see in the middle of the night. That is all they really care to know.

Know Thy Enemy
If you are a person who is having problems with bats or is concerned about this critters coming around your property, then it is time to start learning about them. Understanding their behavior and how quickly a colony can become hundreds, maybe even thousands of bats is something you should know. This can help you to keep these animals away from your property.

One of the most important things for you to know about a bat it is some species will try to live in the walls, attic, or basement of your home. These animals roost, meaning they hang from a rafter or ceiling of a cave, or from a tree branch to sleep. Your attic or other part of your house presents the perfect opportunity for them to have a safe place to sleep that affords them the ability to roost.

However, not every bat would enjoy sleeping inside your attic. This is especially true of males. They would much rather hang from the branch of a tree, as male bats prefer to be outdoors. There are many that will live in caves as well, but this is still outdoors.

The same is not true of the female. Because females are looking for a safe place to have their babies, your attic may become the perfect location. By finding a crack, gap, hole, or other problem in the exterior of your home, the female bat can easily get inside. She then has her babies, beginning a brand-new colony.

The Maternity Colony Begins
The problem with bats is that they live in large colonies. When one female has found a spot to have her babies, you can be sure that others you’re going to follow. This creates the maternity colony.

In no time, four, five, maybe even more female bats could be having babies inside your home. The average female bat has either two or three babies each time she gives birth. Consider that if eight female bats are residing as a maternity colony in your home and each of these has babies, your group of eight bats can quickly become 24 or more. Not a very appetizing thought.

Bats usually have their babies in the summer, starting in late June through the early part of September. This is the time when you have to be extremely diligent about ensuring that there is no problem area that could act as an entryway for female bats to get in your home. If you don’t do this, you could very soon find yourself having a maternity colony living inside your attic.
